Congress is not giving up on credit cards

By now we all know that the Fed passed unprecedented credit card protections in December, but left consumers hanging until July 2010, when the law goes into effect. Meanwhile, issuers like American Express are going all out to minimize their risk while squeezing as much profit as possible out of consumers.

Customers are being slammed with new monthly fees, minimum payments that have doubled, and increased interest rates by banks that are greedily sopping up a large portion of the bailout funds. According to ProPublica, Bank of America, Citigroup, Chase and Wells Fargo are four of the top five companies receiving the most TARP funds. I bet you have a credit card issued from one of those companies. Have you experienced any changes recently?

Luckily, certain members of Congress don’t want to wait until 2010 to protect consumers and so various pieces of legislation have been introduced that would go into effect sooner.
